With an Honours essay on the French excavations at Bellapais Vounous in 1933, he began his specialisation in the prehistory of Cyprus, and proceeded to London where he obtained his Doctorate of Philosophy in 1965 with a thesis on the Cypriote Bronze Age pottery found in Egypt. He subsequently entered the Australian diplomatic service but maintained his active interest in the archaeology of Cyprus and Egypt, including its historiography, and became more directly involved in these pursuits after his enforced retirement, when he served as Director of the Cyprus American Archaeological Research Institute in Nicosia from 1999 to 2003. As a student he worked on a variety of excavations in New Zealand and Israel as well as in Australia (notably at Irrawang and Elizabeth Farm House), and participated in two seasons of Sydney University’s excavations at Zagora in Greece. Between 1975 and 1978 he held a position in the Department of Western Asiatic Antiquities, The British Museum, before returning to Australia to take up a lectureship at La Trobe University in Melbourne, where he is now Reader in Archaeology. Over the last thirty years he has directed numerous excavations at prehistoric sites in Papua New Guinea, Australia (including Moonlight Head midden and Koongine Cave) and Cyprus (Marki, Deneia and Politiko). He has served as Chair of the Heritage Council of NSW’s Archaeological Advisory Panel, Director of the National Trust of Australia (NSW), Vice President of the Australian Association of Consulting Archaeologists Incorporated and was a member of the Australia ICOMOS Burra Charter Working Party. Richard’s experience spans all types of historic site management and planning issues; in particular, large-scale urban archaeology, commercial adaptation of heritage items, facilitation of community participation and innovative conservation practice. He has directed major urban archaeological projects in both Sydney and Melbourne. He and his firm are currently project partners with the University of Sydney in the "Living With Heritage" linkage project, being undertaken at Angkor, Cambodia. She has published two books, two edited volumes, and numerous articles on the subject, including a major study on the role of visual representation in shaping ideas about human evolution and a comprehensive analysis of how museum displays have created knowledge about ancient Egypt. Her current research project in the field of archaeological representation focuses on the World\'s Fairs of the 19th century and the central role they played in defining ancient cultures. Professor Moser\'s other major research interest is community archaeology and community museology.
