This photograph, held at the Museum of South Australia, shows the Hermannsburg artist, Albert Namatjira, painting Mt Sonder (Rutjubma). The date of the photograph is unknown.

According to F.W. Albrecht, (Strehlow's successor), Namatjira was 'about nineteen [when] he married Elkalita (sic), the only daughter of Wappiti (sic) and Membata, members of the Loritja tribe.' The pair married in the 'native way, by going bush for marriage and honeymoon' in response to Carl Strehlow's disapproving view of Christian natives marrying outsiders.

Albrecht claims this atmosphere 'had a definite effect on' Namatjira and 'through it he entered into a new phase of life'.

See F.W Albrecht's article, 'Albert Namatjira Native Artist', in the Aborigines' Friends Association pamphlet, (1950, no page numbers), State Library of South Australia.
