1920 typed letter from Carl Strehlow to 'Mission Friends'

Many of Carl Strehlow's letters were written in German. This English-language letter, written to the Lutheran community on 9 January, 1920, compares the Mission in 1894 with that of the present day. It provides an account of the scene that greeted Strehlow when he arrived in 1894 and represents a 'celebration' of the changes that have taken place under his leadership. The letter is held at the Museum of South Australia. Frieda Strehlow also documented her impressions of Hermannsburg when she arrived the following year on 5 November, 1895. The unfinished letter describes the Strehlows' living conditions, including the rationing of supplies, housing conditions, her struggle to learn the language, and general Mission activities. See Frieda's letter, 'Early primitive conditions at Hermannsburg', reprinted in P.A Scherer's collection "Select Letters From the Outback", Tanunda, SA, 1994, pp 42-46
