Fields

All Heurist Records have:

required fields (always shown, highlighted in red)
recommended fields (always shown)
optional fields (may be shown)

NB: the user may make optional fields visible when adding a record and the Help menu by selecting the appropriate checkboxes.

Some record fields may be repeatable (e.g. a person may have several roles), this is indicated by a '+' plus symbol beside the field.

Heurist defines a large number of fields (also known as attributes or detail types) which support flexible data capture.

Fields can be use in any combination in any records in the database, but are generally restricted to a specific set of fields for a given record type (althoguh the set may vary between different instances).

Fields may be defined, for a particualr record type, as required, recommended, optional or excluded, and may be allowed to repeat or restricted to a single value.

Field types

Fields may be of a variety of types (additional field types require further programming of the system):

Boolean: data entered as a default value or no value, e.g. Yes/No, On/Off, True/False

Date: data entered relating to date and in date format

Blocktext: data or information entered is captured as a block of text

Float: data entered with numeric value, as a sequence of digits with optional decimal point and sign character

Freetext: data or information entered as text is captured in the way it is entered

Integer: data entered has minimum and maximum values

Numeric: data entered with numeric values only

Enum: data is preconfigured with set values, e.g. the values in drop-down menus (these can be expanded, refined or replaced by contacting the Heurist system administrator).

Resource: data drawn from preconfigured list of Heurist resource types

Geo: the field contains geo-spatial data in latitude and longitude values

File: a filename is recorded and a digital file uploaded

Partial List of Fields

Note that this is a rather long list of fields which has been developed over three years of development of the system. Many of these fields are no longer used (or were never used), however they have only a minor influence since they are generally invisible to users. For a full list of current fields, visit the Field Definition screen in Heurist (accessible to Administrators only) or the pulldown for additional fields in the record addition/editing form (accessible to all users).

Additional fields can be added by Administrators without programming. The set of fields composing a record type can also be changed, either globally or for specific instances of Heurist.
