Heurist is Not Anonymous!
Heurist is designed for researchers, teachers and students, rather than the broad public. The quality of the information entered depends on people being responsible for the information they put in. So everyone in the system is individually identified through a lightweight registration process and administrator approval.
Individual identification of users allows users to set up colleague groups with whom they wish to share information, or whose bookmarking and rating patterns they wish to use to discover new resources of interest (through social bookmarking).
Registration
Registration collects minimal information required to identify a user - name, email, institution, research interests - but users can optionally add further information such as contact details and photograph (as of Dec 2008, these details can only be added at time of registration - we will implement editing of a user's profile at a later date).

After registration information has been completed, the system emails the administrators of the system who must approve the registration - this step is necessary to reduce the risk of hostile users. Registrations are normally approved within minutes or hours, depending on the time in Sydney (or other parts of the world where DIU staff are travelling ...). Once registration is approved you will receive a confirming email - in the meantime, Heurist can still be searched for content, but records cannot be edited, bookmarked, tagged or published until the user logs in.
See Licencing Agreement for Conditions of Use
Heurist is a non-anonymous academic bookmarking system. This is intended to discourage irresponsible use. Registrations have to be approved, but this will normally happen within a few minutes weekdays/evenings (Australian EST), and within a few hours at the weekend.
By registering as a user you are able to add records to the database, bookmark existing records, tag (keyword) records, add personal notes, contribute to the wiki pages, save your favourite searches and create your own customised 'home page' (a list of your most used URLs generated on-the-fly by Heurist to which you can easily add/remove entries).
Unregistered users can only search for existing entries in the database.
Registration should only take you a minute.
